Thirty
As her hired hack neared Isabellaâs front gate, the strung-out tightness in Rosieâs head and shoulders dissolved into lightheaded exhaustion.
Home. At last.
The plaque on the gate glimmered in the faint moonlight.
Gardenvale
In honor of Alycia Stocktonâs wonderful garden.
She couldnât remember when sheâd last felt such a sense of relief at the sight of a familiar front gate.
Maybe never.
She stepped down, paid the driver and tiptoed wearily up the sidewalk to the front gate.
No need to advertise to the entire household what time Iâm finally home.
She slipped her hand over the familiar latch and stepped into Sebastian and Isabellaâs front garden, catching the fresh sweet fragrance of jasmine.
A dark shape loomed up from the darkness and her heart leapt to her mouth. Her footsteps froze.
âWhoooo⦠Whaatâ¦.â Her breath was raspy in her throat, and then she recognized the shadow.
âAlex⦠What on earthâ¦?â
She let out a gasp of relief as a furious rush of anger flooded her tired brain.
âWhat are you doing here?â She spat out the words in an urgent whisper.
âFor goodnessâ sakes. Are you stalking me or something? First the club. And now here?â
She wiped the back of her hand across her eyes.
I donât believe this guy. Who does he think he is?
For half a minute, the fury galvanized her. But then her mind and limbs sagged under a renewed wave of exhaustion.
âStalking you?â His tone was corrosive.
âWhy in heavenâs name would I want to do that?â
He shook his head, his dark locks flopping over wide-open eyes that shone white in the night gloom.
âI was curious to see how far your betrayal would extend, thatâs all.â His usually warm voice was laced with contempt.
âYou lectured us all about what a dangerous fellow this conquistador is, and now youâre snuggling up to him? I wanted to get my facts right, thatâs all.
âWhat is he? Some blackguard out to kill me, or your latest lover?â
His fury slammed into her like the blows of a sledgehammer.
âMy latest lover? How dare you?â
Her legs set up such a tremor she was frightened sheâd slump to the ground right there in front of him.
But sheâd be darned if she was going to let him see it.
âWhy should you care, anyway,â she hissed at him, still maintaining a whisper, but furious with it.
âYou belittle everything I say. A few days ago, you decried my suggestion he was involved with Alistair Gordon, Bramâs son.
âAnd what business is it of yours what I do in my private life? I havenât noticed youâve been interested in much except yourself.â
He stared, and adjusted his mouth as if he was going to reply, but then thought better of it.
A long silence hung between them, and then he spoke.
âBelieve it or not, I am interested. I donât want you to court unnecessary danger. For goodnessâ sake, Rosie. You canât trust that devil, surely?
âIf you thought he was capable of murder last week, whatâs changed that youâre snuggling up to him now?â
She saw red again.
âI. Am. Not. Snuggling up to him,â she enunciated. âNo matter what it might look like.
